EU Energy Chief Warns of Prolonged Crisis Amid Middle East Conflict
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has declared the energy market turmoil triggered by the Middle East conflict will persist indefinitely. Oil prices breached $100/barrel after Iran's retaliation closed the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting 20% of global energy shipments.
European officials are evaluating emergency measures including fuel rationing, though remain committed to phasing out Russian gas. "This will be a long crisis," Jørgensen told the Financial Times. "Energy prices will be higher for a very long time."
While denying immediate supply shortages, Brussels anticipates worsening conditions for critical commodities in coming weeks. The Commission is developing strategies to mitigate what it describes as structural, long-term war impacts on energy infrastructure.
